We spent the morning ringing on the Marsh south of the railway where it began misty and murky but brightened up by mid morning. We saw 310 Redwings, mainly arriving at daybreak, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 3 Goldcrests, 75 Chaffinches, 1 Golden Plover, 4 Chiffchaffs, 2 Yellowhammers, 8 Tree Sparrows, 9 Greenfinches, 30 Skylarks, 1 Common Buzzard, 620 Starlings flying W, 46 Fieldfares flying W, 1 Sparrowhawk, 7 Lapwings, 1 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Siskins, 70 Stock Doves flying W, 1 Snipe, 2 Corn Buntings, 12 Mute Swans and 1 Brambling.

Birds ringed 28: Goldcrest 3, Chiffchaff 2, Chaffinch 9, Reed Bunting 8, Robin 2, Dunnock 1, Song Thrush 2, Redwing 1.

We spent an overcast morning ringing at Shuart where we saw 31 Fieldfares, 151 Redwings, 25 Song Thrushes, 15 Blackbirds, 2 Lesser Redpolls, 1 Barn Owl, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 51 Lapwings, 32 Skylarks, 31 Greylag Geese, 5 Ring-necked Parakeets, 2 Kestrels, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 49 Mallards, 1 Stonechat, 1 Tree Sparrow, 1 Marsh Harrier, 64 Chaffinches, 1 Corn Bunting, 2 Sparrowhawks, 40 Reed Buntings, 1 Water Rail, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 18 Siskins, 24 Linnets and 100 Stock Doves.

It was drizzly this morning as we walked around various sites at Reculver. We saw 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Grey Herons, 35 Stock Doves, 1 Goldcrests, 56 Coot, 22 Gadwall, 58 Mallard, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Tufted Duck, 2 Green Sandpipers, 6 Little Grebes, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Water Rail, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 750 Starlings, 4 Chiffchaffs, 2 Shoveler, 11 Gannets E, 220 Dark-bellied Brent Geese at Bishopstone, 1 juvenile Black Redstart on the rocks by the Towers and 1 Little Egret.

This morning Matt walked from Shuart to Bishopstone and saw a good range of species. He counted 13 Goldcrests, 4 Chiffchaffs, 20 Long-tailed Tits, 5 Redwings, 30 Robins, 20 Song Thrushes, 9 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Water Rail, 38 Mallard, 4 Grey Herons, 60 Goldfinches, 15 Corn Buntings, 4 Rock Pipits and 5 Great Crested Grebes. When he reached Plumpudding Stables at 0740 he found an adult Little Bunting which he saw and heard well along the track to the seawall by the Stables. It flew across the path but was then flushed by a passing runner. It was a different bird to the one he found earlier this autumn being a much more colourful adult. He also saw 2 Swallows, 1 Tree Sparrow, 130 Reed Buntings, 22 Lapwings, 11 Stonechats, 1 Fieldfare, 3 Little Egrets, 1 Snipe, 4 Little Grebes, 1 red-head Goosander flying W, 100 Linnets, 1 Red-throated Diver, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kingfisher, 172 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Gannets, 1 Black Redstart, 120 Stock Doves and 5 Firecrests.

On a showery and breezy morning we walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and back. Birds we saw included 44 Goldfinches flying W, 120 Chaffinches flying W, 24 Siskins flying W, 1 Sandwich Tern flying W, 3 Pied Wagtails, 4 Little Egrets, 20 Meadow Pipits, 3 Redshank, 4 Stonechats, 1 Marsh Harrier and 23 Gannets feeding off shore. We also recorded 1 Common Buzzard, 33 Mallard, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 22 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Great Black-backed Gull, 1 Red-throated Diver, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 7 Little Grebes, 3 Curlew, 70 Oystercatchers, 1 Guillemot feeding close inshore, 1 Turnstone, 150 Starlings, 2 Corn Buntings, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Swallows flying W, 1 Kingfisher and 1 Rock Pipit.

We received information concerning a juvenile female Cetti's Warbler we ringed on the Marsh south of the railway on 17th July 2024. It was controlled by the Thames Estuary Ringing Group at Swanscombe Marshes on 24 October and had flown 65 km.

Birds ringed 33: Chiffchaff 3, Long-tailed Tit 10, Wren 1, Reed Bunting 6, Chaffinch 3, Blackcap 1, Robin 2, Dunnock 1, Song Thrush 3, Blackbird 3.

Whilst we were ringing Dave Smith walked from Reculver to Plumpudding and back. Derek Smith walked from Minnis Bay to Reculver this morning and counted 26 Greylag Geese, 12 Little Egrets, 13 Grey Herons, 3 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 9 Great Crested Grebes, 45 Turnstone, 140 Oystercatchers E, 9 Golden Plovers, 7 Pied Wagtails W, 3 Rock Pipits, 1 Wheatear, 2 Bearded Tits, 1 Kingfisher, 8 Stonechats, 1 Lesser Redpoll W, 16 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Chiffchaffs and 9 Corn Buntings.

This morning Matt walked from Shuart to Plumpudding and on to Reculver before walking back along the embankment. Birds he saw included 13 Goldcrests, 7 Redwing, 1 Green Woodpecker, 7 Chiffchaffs, 9 Cetti's Warblers, 57 Mallard, 13 Stonechats, 2 Dartford Warblers, 40 Reed Buntings, 10 Great Crested Grebes, 40 Turnstone, 2 Kingfishers, 30 Ringed Plovers, 2 Firecrests, 9 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 24 Skylarks, 1 Red-throated Divers, 2 Siskins, 80 Oystercatchers, 8 Curlew, 45 Linnets, 4 Little Egrets, 1 Rock Pipit, 2 Shelduck, 13 Corn Buntings, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Little Grebes and 1 Marsh Harrier.

Matt also found an interesting Stonechat, 400 metres east of the Towers and just south of the seawall. It was a pale female showing some of the characteristics of Eastern Stonechat (maura). It was wary and it was difficult to get close views so all the necessary crucial features could not be seen. From the photos the pale plumage and unmarked throat are clear and it appears the have black underwing coverts. It was last seen in the late morning but could not be seen subsequently.

On a surprisingly mild morning we walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and back. The first bird we saw was a lively Black Redstart on the rocks and wall at the car park. Other birds we recorded included 8 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Gannet W, 1 Chiffchaff, 24 Meadow Pipits, 7 Stonechats, 54 Mallard, 1 Teal, 2 Redshank, 8 Oystercatchers, 38 Carrion Crows, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Wheatears, 1 Dunlin, 30 Linnets, 15 Turnstone, 1 Grey Plover and 11 Grey Herons in off the sea at Minnis Bay. Other birds seen were 9 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Little Egret, 5 Curlew, 26 Magpies, 6 Reed Buntings, 1 Water Rail, 1 Corn Bunting, 1 large auk E, 1 Kestrel, 1 Bearded Tit, 1 Short-eared Owl at the Oyster Farm and 1 Rock Pipit.

Matt was out from 0730 to 1345 and walked from Chamber's Wall to Plumpudding and Coldharbour and then along the seawall and along the cliffs to Bishopstone before returning via the Green Wall. After this half an hour at Reculver produced 12 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Rock Pipits, 1 Gannet E, 5 Teal W and 1 Red-throated Diver E.

Derek was also out this morning and walked from Shuart to Chamber's Wall along the embankment and back via Plumpudding and Brooksend.  After we had finished ringing, Matt went to the Towers for a seawatch with Dave Smith. Between 1105 and 1505 they counted 1,968 Dark-bellied Brent Geese flying W, 179 Common Scoter flying E, 19 Sandwich Terns E, 39 Wigeon W, 6 Kittiwakes E, 22 Gannets E, 27 Little Gulls E, 2 Rock Pipits, 9 Arctic Skuas W, 9 Teal W, 6 Skylarks in off the sea, 2 juvenile Long-tailed Skuas E at 1205, 1 Razorbill E, 1 Little Egret, 1 Redwing in off, 3 Common Terns E, 3 Pintail W, 1 Arctic Tern W, 1 Goldcrest landing on the Towers, 3 Shelduck W and 1 Wheatear.

 October 1st

We had very limited time this morning so only walked around the Towers and saw 5 Chiffchaffs, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Blackcap, 1 Kestrel, 1 Grey Wagtail flying W, 2 Grey Herons and 1 Curlew.

This morning Matt walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and on to Reculver returning along the ||Green Wall and saw 1 Blackcap, 9 Chiffchaffs, 6 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Swallow, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 8 Corn Buntings, 4 Stonechats, 2 Wheatears, 64 Mallard, 3 Little Egrets, 1 Kingfisher, 3 Grey Herons, 3 Little Grebes, 17 Skylarks, 1 Rock Pipit, 5 Teal, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Kestrels, 30 Linnets, 14 Golden Plover and 1 Merlin.
