January 31st

There was a strong WNW wind blowing this morning so we spent a couple of hours seawatching at the Towers from 0720 but didn't see a great deal. We counted 510 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 3 Eider (121st), 16 Red-throated Divers E, 1 Fulmar W, 1 Peregrine, 14 Turnstone, 1,000+ Herring Gulls W with good numbers of "argentatus" birds amongst them, 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls W, 2 Gannets W, 24 Common Gulls W and 1 Great Northern Diver sitting on the sea off the Towers.

January 30th

We spent a glorious, sunny, winter's morning ringing on the Marsh south of the railway line where we saw 336 Cormorants flying out to sea, 15 Blackbirds, 43 Linnets, 6 Tree Sparrows, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Snipe, 3 Stonechats, 150 Corn Buntings, 1 Peregrine, 12 Song Thrushes, 2 Yellowhammers, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Golden Plover and 1 Kestrel.

Birds ringed 9: Reed Bunting 3, Robin 1, Yellowhammer 1, Song Thrush 2, Blackbird 2.

January 29th

On a blustery morning we walked inland at Reculver and counted 180 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Pied Wagtail, 2 Little Grebes, 1 Kestrel, 1 Jay, 2 Common Buzzards, 13 Goldfinches, 2 Chiffchaffs, 24 Mute Swans, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Green Woodpecker and 1 Black Redstart.

Matt was also out this morning and walked at Brooksend where he counted 18 Tufted Duck, 5 Gadwall, 20 Mallard, 2 Little Grebes, 40 Greylag Geese and 1 Raven. At Chamber's Wall he saw 120 Corn Buntings and 18 Yellowhammers (120th).

A colour ringed Redshank that we recorded at Minnis Bay on December 5th was seen there again on January 5th. It had been ringed at Harty by the Swale Wader Group on 2nd November 2021.

This morning we had our first ringing session of the year at Reculver during which time we saw 1 Common Buzzard, 2 Redwings, 2 Goldcrests, 2 Chiffchaffs, 14 Long-tailed Tits, 3 Jays, 3 Moorhens, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 2 Green Sandpipers, 22 Mute Swans, 30 Linnets, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Stonechat, 1 Shoveler, 1 Coot, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Little Egret, 34 Goldfinches, 1 Black Redstart and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker.

On the first breezy morning for while we walked from Reculver and along the seawall but only recorded 56 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 32 Oystercatchers E, 1 Redshank, 2 Stonechats, 9 Goldfinches, 18 Golden Plover, 1 Curlew and 9 Mute Swans.

January 26th

We had a change of scenery this morning and had a walk at Netherhale where we saw 12 Chaffinches, 1 Chiffchaff, 12 Tufted Ducks, 10 Goldfinches, 2 drumming Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 3 Kestrels, 2 Ring-necked Parakeets, 2 Mistle Thrush, 1 Jay, 1 Grey Heron, 32 Mallard, 50 Linnets and 1 Marsh Harrier.

This afternoon we had a walk at Shuart and recorded 8 Goldfinches, 1 Chiffchaff, 5 Tufted Ducks, 1 Gadwall, 16 Mallard, 6 Mute Swans, 2 Kestrels, 1 Grey Heron and 2 Coot.

January 25th

On another calm and dreary morning there was not a great deal be seen as we walked along the seawall up to Coldharbour. We counted 71 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Kestrel, 9 Redshank, 1 Sheduck W, 2 Marsh Harriers, 22 Reed Buntings, 5 Turnstones, 4 Oystercatchers, 5 Goldfinches, 2 Coot, 5 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Mallard and 2 Stonechats.

I have just received the ringing information of a Dutch ringed adult male Blackbird we controlled at Shuart on 19th November 2021. It had been ringed at Vlieland, Friesland, The Netherlands on 6th November 2021 and had flown 327 km SW to reach Shuart.

January 24th

It was overcast and very quiet this morning at Reculver as we walked along the seawall. We recorded 39 Dark-bellied Brent Geese,  1 Kestrel, 12 Redshank, 10 Turnstone, 7 Oystercatchers, 8 Mallard, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Grey Plover, 34 Ringed Plovers, 3 Shelduck, 1 Curlew, 3 Corn Buntings, 1 Stonechat and 14 Meadow Pipits.

This afternoon I walked inland at Reculver and saw 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Common Buzzard, 2 Jays and 1 Black Redstart.

Janaury 23rd

On a dull but still morning with the tide out we walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and back. We saw 220 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 14 Mallard, 1 Kestrel, 19 Redshank, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Raven flying W and then back E, 8 Oystercatchers, 10 Ringed Plovers, 2 Turnstone, 150 House Sparrows, 24 Corn Buntings, 2 Curlews, 13 Reed Buntings, 1 Stonechat and 1 Common Buzzard.

Derek Smith was also out this morning and between 1030 and 1200 walked from Shuart to Brooksend and recorded 19 Mute Swans, 74 Greylag Geese, 9 Tufted Duck, 14 Grey Herons, 45 Chaffinches feeding in a stubble field, 1 Goldcrest and 6 Corn Buntings.

This morning we walked along the seawall from Reculver and Matt walked in from Shuart and we met at Coldharbour. Between us we recorded 1 Kestrel, 131 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 23 Redshank, 14 Oystercatchers, 28 Ringed Plovers, 1 Turnstone and 2 Black Brants, one flying W at Reculver and the other at the Wantsum outflow. Other birds we saw were 22 Mallard, 1 Curlew, 4 Shelduck, 1 Golden Plover, 12 Corn Buntings, 1 Water Rail, 1 Snipe, 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Red-throated Divers, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 4 Wigeon, 15 Reed Buntings, 1 Grey Plover, 1 Stonechat, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Firecrest, 1 Chiffchaff and 2 Jays.

It was another bright but cold morning as we walked from Reculver and back along the railway embankment and Green Wall. We saw 1 Pied Wagtail, 4 Red-throated Divers, 1 Raven, 19 Redshank, 1 Dartford Warbler, 2 Common Buzzards, 3 Corn Buntings, 96 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 12 Oystercatchers, 5 Shelduck, 38 Mallard, 20 Reed Buntings, 42 Ringed Plovers, 9 Goldfinches, 2 Stonechats, 1 Grey Plover, 1 Kingfisher, 50 Golden Plovers, 1 Marsh Harrier and 1 Sparrowhawk.

Later this morning Matt walked along West Brook Valley and saw 1 Siberian Chiffchaff, 6 Common Chiffchaffs, 2 Firecrest, 1 Grey Wagtail, 4 Redwings and 4 Long-tailed Tits.

On a sunny morning with a cold and fresh NW wind blowing we spent an hour at the Towers before walking inland. Birds we saw included 452 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Fulmar E, 27 Red-throated Divers, 3 Wigeon W, 1 Kittiwake W (118th), 4 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Great Northern Diver, 1 Gannaet E, 300 Herring Gulls W, 1 Stonechat, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Jay, 6 Long-tailed Tits, 19 Mute Swans, 1 Redwing and 1 Black Redstart (119th).

The fog had cleared overnight and we walked from Reculver to the Wantsum outflow with the sun shining now and then. We counted 808 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 adult Black Brant, 4 Stonechats, 1 Pied Wagtail, 12 Redshank, 2 Curlew, 5 Turnstone, 1 Corn Bunting, 2 Oystercatchers, 52 Ringed Plovers, 1 Common Buzzard and 2 Mallards.

I left my house this morning with the sun shining and a heavy frost but by the time I reached Chamber's Wall the fog had arrived and visibility was down to less than 100 metres. It was a struggle to see anything as I walked up to the Oyster Farm but I did manage to record 3 Coot, 5 Moorhens, 16 Corn Buntings, 1 Skylark, 9 Redshank, 230 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 10 Ringed Plovers, 8 Blackbirds, 166 House Sparrows and 7 Oystercatchers.

January 17th

On a bright and cold morning we walked along the seawall from Reculver and saw 1 Kestrel, 1 Goldfinch, 17 Mute Swans, 24 Corn Buntings, 162 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 28 Ringed Plovers, 1 Turnstone, 1 Dartford Warbler, 44 Golden Plover and 2 Stonechats.

A visit to a sunny Shuart this afternoon produced 1 Sparrowhawk, 12 Goldfinches, 2 Common Buzzards, 1 Jay, 6 Ring-necked Parakeets, 31 Mallard, 36 Teal, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Coot, 4 Tufted Ducks, 19 Mute Swans and 34 Greylag Geese.

I have just received information about a Long-tailed Tit we ringed at Reculver on 17th October 2021 that was controlled at Stonelees Golf Club on 12th January and had moved 12 km ESE.

This morning we walked at Chamber's Wall and Netherhale where we recorded 43 Mute Swans, 1 Song Thrush, 6 Coot, 38 Corn Buntings, 40 Chaffinches, 50 House Sparrows, 42 Golden Plover, 1 Tree Sparrow, 1 Stonechat, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 22 Blackbirds and 3 Tufted Duck.

January 15th

It was a struggle to see anything this morning with thick fog for the duration. On our walk from Reculver to Coldharbour we managed to see or hear 1 Pied Wagtail, 17 Mallard, 2 Shelduck, 2 Redshank, 5 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Corn Bunting, 250 House Sparrows, 1 Coot, 2 Stonechat, 1 Turnstone and 35 Dark-bellied Brent Geese.

Matt walked from Shuart to Coldharbour and recorded 40 Blackbirds, 5 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Water Rail, 1 Shelduck, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 42 Mallard, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Stonechat, 1 Little Egret, 1 Kingfisher, 70 Corn Buntings, 15 Song Thrushes and 3 Tree Sparrows.

Derek Smith was also out this morning and wlaked from Shuart to Brooksend and on to Minnis Bay. He started his walk in fog but ended in bright sunshine and counted 16 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Little Grebes, 4 Red-throated Divers, 1 Gannet E, 9 Grey Herons, 46 Greylag Geese, 17 Russian White-fronted Geese flying S, 22 Tufted Duck, 56 Mallard, 2 Teal, 1 Marsh Harrier, 137 Sanderling, 34 Redshank, 2 Cetti's Warblers and 6 Corn Buntings.

This afternoon, Matt found 3 Short-eared Owls and 1 Snipe at the Oyster Farm and during the day Steffan Walton found a Snow Bunting (117th) below the cliffs at Bishopstone. 

Andrew Lipczynski completed the NE Kent Co-ordinated Wader Count Survey and walked from the eastern end of Minnis Bay to Coldharbour and back between 1000 and 1145. His total wader counts were 217 Sanderling, 115 Turnstone, 48 Redshank and 2 Grey Plovers. He also saw the large flock of 1,035 Dark-bellied Brent Geese together with the adult Black Brant and the Pale-bellied Brent Goose.

On another beautiful winter's morning Matt walked inland at Reculver and then met us on the seawall and we walked up to Coldharbour and back. Between us we saw 1 Little Owl, 2 Bearded Tits, 3 Little Egrets, 35 Red-throated Divers, 20 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Fulmar flying W, 20 Corn Buntings, 60 Linnets, 1 Rock Pipit, 65 Dunlin, 40 Ringed Plovers, 15 Grey Plovers, 12 Golden Plovers, 1 female Velvet Scoter flying E (116th)1 Dartford Warbler, 1 Shelduck, 9 Common Scoter, 1 Peregrine, 1 Common Buzzard, 80 House Sparrows, 4 Stonechats,18 Redwings, 1 Water Rail and 2 Chiffchaffs. Matt also saw 7 Russian White-fronted Geese at Brooksend.

Thre were at least 2 Short-eared Owls at the Oyster Farm this afternoon. In addition, Dave Smith found a Purple Sandpiper at Minnis Bay.

We had a change of scenery today and visited Dungeness on a beautiful, sunny winter's day. Our highlights included 36 Bewick's Swans, 2 Glossy Ibises, 6 Cattle Egrets and 3 Great White Egrets. We also saw 4 Common Porpoises which are now a very rare sight at Reculver.

On a glorious winter's morning we walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and saw 108 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Pied Wagtail, 14 Mute Swans, 3 Stonechats, 1 Grey Plover, 2 Redshank, 5 Turnstone, 9 Goldfinches, 32 Mallard, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Common Buzzard, 2 Shelduck, 1 Gannet E, 1 Dartford Warbler sunning itself in a bush beside the seawall, 41 Ringed Plovers and 8 Meadow Pipits.

Matt was out at the same time but walked from Shuart to Coldharbour and saw 3 Common Buzzards, 7 Cetti's Warblers, 6 Little Egrets, 24 Curlew, 295 Oystercatchers, 6 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Red-throated Divers, 51 Mallard, 3 Litle Grebes, 6 Tree Sparrow, 60 Corn Buntings, 1 Water Rail, 45 Mute Swans, 66 Blackbirds, 15 Coot, 1 Tufted Duck, 3 Grey Herons, 4 Fieldfares, 43 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Marsh Harrier.

On a bright and frosty morning we walked from Minnis Bay to Plumpudding lagoon and saw 52 Sanderling, 17 Redshank, 2 Grey Herons, 1 Rock Pipit (111th), 1 Curlew, 2 Pied Wagtails, 48 Oystercatchers, 7 Turnstone, 4 Lapwings, 46 Mallard, 112 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 5 Moorhens, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Grey Plovers, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits and 1 Little Egrets.

This afternoon a quick walk at Reculver produced 2 Chiffchaffs, 1 Jay, 1 male Shovler (112th), 2 Mallard and 1 Great Crested Grebe.

Later in the afternoon Peter Carr saw 2 Short-eared Owls (113rd) at the Oyster Farm.

Matt arrived at Reculver at 0615 and then, as it began to get light, walked up to Plumpudding and back to Reculver. We arrived later and met him on the seawall at Coldharbour. Between us we saw 2 Woodcocks, 8 Redwings, 2 Water Rails, 5 Cetti's Warblers, 5 Common Buzzards, 1 Green Sandpiper, 133 Golden Plovers, 42 Corn Buntings, 62 Chaffinches, 7 Tree Sparrows (106th), 1 Brambling (107th), 1 Sparrowhawk, 64 Stock Doves, 23 Fieldfares (108th), 14 Coot, 29 Song Thrushes, 39 Blackbirds, 21 Lapwings, 1 Lapland Bunting calling as it flew NW over the embankment (109th), 2 Green Woodpeckers, 5 Russian White-fronted Geese, 5 Stonechats, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Red-throated Diver, 1 Dartford Warbler, 600 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 16 Redshank, 2 Grey Plovers, 22 Mallard, 36 Ringed Plovers, 1 adult Black Brant, 6 Shelduck, 2 Little Grebes and 1 Pale-bellied Brent Goose.

This afternoon we spent some time at Minnis Bay and counted 57 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Common Scoter E (110th), 5 Red-throated Divers, 1 Gannet E, 1 Dunlin, 7 Dark-bellied Brent Geese and 1 Guillemot.

It was bright, cold and sunny this morning with a very fresh NW wind blowing so we spent 90 minutes at the Towers where we saw 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull W (101st), 1 second winter Yellow-legged Gull W (102nd), 484 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Great Northern Diver W (103rd), 1 Curlew, 1 Shelduck, 7 Red-throated Divers, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 adult Peregrine, 450 Herring Gulls W, 1 Red-breasted Merganser W (104th), 45 Common Gulls and 3 Shags flying E over the Towers

We then visited Shuart and saw 1 Woodcock (105th), 8 Teal, 1 Wigeon, 30 Mallard and 1 Grey Heron, 1 Purple Sandpiper and 5 Russian White-fronted Geese.

January 4th

This morning we walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and recorded 350 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Stonechats, 9 Redshank, 8 Oystercatchers, 2 Gannets W, 8 Shelduck, 1 Little Egret, 34 Ringed Plovers, 4 Little Grebes, 2 Common Buzzards, 4 Turnstone, 2 Red-throated Divers, 11 Goldfinches and 14 Mallard.

Matt birded the whole area between 0600 and 1600 and identified 81 species. His highlights were 2 Barn Owls, 1 Long-eared Owl (92nd), 1 Pintail, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit (93rd), 1 Purple Sandpiper, 5 White-fronted Geese, 1 immature Shag (94th)  and 2 Grey Partridges (95th). Other species he saw that were new for 2022 were Teal (96th), Guillemot (97th), Kingfisher (98th), Redwing (99th) and Greenfinch (100th).

It was chillier this morning as we walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and counted 2 Kestrels, 5 Redshank, 443 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 17 Mallard, 39 Ringed Plovers, 6 Goldfinches, 100 House Sparrows, 1 Grey Plover, 5 Shelduck, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 7 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Grebes, 2 Stonechats, 1 Peregrine hunting Woodpigeons, 2 Turnstone and 1 Pied Wagtail.

Alex Perry saw 5 Russian White-fronted Geese, 1 male Pintail and 1 Purple Sandpiper.

This morning we visited various sites in the recording area and saw 7 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Ring-necked Parakeets, 300 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Red-throated Diver, 1 Pied Wagtail, 9 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Chiffchaff, 4 Goldfinches, 5 Gadwall, 1 Water Rail, 15 Linnets and 1 Water Rail.

Dave Smith found the Black Brant with the Dark-bellied Brent Geese on the fields at Reculver.

January 1st

2022 began with a very mild but blustery morning. I arrived at Reculver at 0715 when it was still dark and walked inland as the sun came up. Birds I saw included 2 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Coot, 3 Chiffchaffs, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Mallard, 1 Gadwall, 1 Green Sandpiper and 1 Water Rail. Next I walked along the seawall from Reculver to Coldharbour and counted 100 House Sparrows, 6 Shelduck, 2 Pied Wagtails, 2 Stonechats, 25 Linnets, 2 Grey Plovers, 3 Turnstone, 1 male Marsh Harrier, 2 Little Grebes, 3 Redshank, 1 Little Egret, 240 Lapwings in two flocks, 1 Skylark, and 1 Razorbill flying E close in shore. After this we spent time at the eastern end of the Marsh where we found a Barn Owl, 5 Russian White-fronted Geese and 2 Mediterranean Gulls. Our total of species for the day was a disappointing 59 with some common birds not seen.

Dave Smith was out in the Shuart, Brooksend and Plumpudding area today with his highlights being 1 Cattle Egret at Plumpudding Stables, 1 Russian White-fronted Goose, 1 Ruff, 1 Razorbill, 1 Purple Sandpiper, 2 Marsh Harriers and 1 Red-throated Diver. 

Julian and Alex Perry walked around the area from 0720 and 1730 and recorded 75 species with some of their highlights being 1 Dartford Warbler, 1 Little Owl, 1 Peregrine, 1 Pintail, 2 Firecrests, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Raven, Red-legged Partridges, 1 Pheasant, 1 Wigeon, 1 Pochard, Ringed Plovers, Common Gulls, 4 Grey Herons, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 2 Ring-necked Parakeets and 5 Long-tailed Tits.

 Derek Smith was also out between  0800 and 1200 and walked from Shuart to Brooksend, Minnis Bay and the Stables. He counted 1 Gannet E, 1 Fulmar E, 2 Red-throated Divers E, 18 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Cattle Egret, 8 Little Egrets, 46 Greylag Geese, 5 White-fronted Geese, 2 Gadwall, 8 Tufted Duck, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, 14 Golden Plovers, 1 Purple Sandpiper, 140 Sanderling, 1 Dunlin, 10 Curlew, 1 Grey Wagtail W, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Chiffchafff and 6 Corn Buntings.
