An hour at Reculver this morning produced 2 Swifts flying W, 16 Meadow Pipits, 1 Little Egret, 12 Goldfinches and 1 adult Gannet flying E.

Matt was out later this morning and walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and on to Plumpudding. His highlight was finding an adult Roseate Tern (165th) at Plumpudding roosting with good numbers of Common and Sandwich Terns. Other birds he saw included 3 Chiffchaffs, 1 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Sparrowhawk, 150 Common Terns, 5 Avocets, 6 Common Sandpipers, 5 Dunlin, 9 Redshank, 42 Whimbrel, 18 adult Oystercatchers with 2 young, 16 Shelduck, 4 Ringed Plovers, 6 Turnstone, 5 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Little Egret, 1 Wood Sandpiper in Coldharbour, 200 Sandwich Terns, 250 Mediterranean Gulls, 1 Gannet, 12 Great Black-backed Gulls and 1 Kittiwake on the beach at Coldharbour.

At Reculver this morning we recorded  Grey Heron, 2 Little Grebes, 7 Tufted Ducks, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 8 Coot, 1 Common Sandpiper, 40 Sand Martins, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Wheatears, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Whimbrel W and 4 Sandwich Terns W.

On a showery morning Matt walked from Reculver to Plumpudding and recorded a good range of species. He saw 29 Gannets, 48 Sandwich Terns, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Little Owl, 182 Mediterranean Gulls, 285 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Wood Sandpipers, 1 flying W and 1 in Coldharbour (164th), 4 Whitethroats, 9 Little Egrets, 6 Redshank, 3 Stonechats, 9 Common Sandpipers, 64 Whimbrel, 5 Sedge Warblers, 150 Starlings, 3 Swallows, 7 Yellow Wagtails, 49 Common Terns, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Teal, 2 Dunlin, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 17 Shelduck, 6 Avocets, 3 Turnstone, 4 Sanderling and 2 Common Scoter.

Derek Smith was out between 0530 and 0900 and walked from Shuart to Plumpudding and on to Coldharbour. He saw 7 Little Egrets, 27 Gannets, 7 Great Black-backed Gulls, 65 Mediterranean Gulls, 35 Common Terns, 40 Sandwich Terns, 7 Sanderling, 16 Turnstone, 57 Whimbrel, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit E, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 4 Dunlin, 8 Common Sandpipers, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 130 Swallows flying S, 6 Yellow Wagtails and 8 Cetti's Warblers.

Matt spent the morning ringing at Reculver and saw 2 Little Grebes, 5 Gadwall, 1 Ringed Plover, 40 Sand Martins, 1 Green Sandpiper, 7 Tufted Duck, 1 Corn Bunting, 1 Common Sandpiper, 82 Mallard, 3 Shoveler, 1 Teal, 4 Cetti's Warblers, 5 Chiffchaffs, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Grey Heron, 5 Coot, 1 Garden Warbler, 8 Sedge Warblers, 1 Grey Wagtail, 16 Blackcaps, 6 Whitethroats, 2 Sparrowhawks, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Kestrel and 1 Willow Warbler.

This morning at Reculver and Coldharbour Matt recorded 3 Willow Warblers, 15 Tufted Duck, 50 Mallard, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Green Sandpipers, 3 Grey Herons, 13 Whitethroats, 10 Sedge Warblers, 1 Blackcap, 3 Corn Buntings, 3 Little Owls, 12 Mediterranean Gulls, 5 Yellow Wagtails, 5 Common Sandpipers, 1 Little Egret, 1 Whimbrel, 5 Cetti's Warblers, 6 Avocets, 17 Shelduck, 1 Redshank, 40 Sand Martins, 3 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall  and 2 Chiffchaffs.

July 20th

 This morning at Reculver, Matt recorded 16 Tufted Duck, 24 Mallard, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Common Buzzard, the first Willow Warbler of the autumn, 3 Chiffchaffs, 14 Blackcaps, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 4 Coot, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 House Martins, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Jay, 6 Whitethroats, 20 Reed Warblers, 2 Sedge Warblers, 1 Great White Egret flying W (163rd), 3 Grey Herons, 1 Red Kite W, 3 Little Egrets, 60 Sand Martins, 5 Greylag Geese and 1 Hobby.

This morning Matt walked from Reculver to Pamphlet and counted 403 Mediterranean Gulls, 2 Sanderling, 2 Dunlin, 1 Gannet, 16 Common Terns, 2 Swifts, 8 Whitethroats, 20 Sand Martins, 13 Sedge Warblers, 1 Grey Heron, 3 Little Egrets, 5 Common Sandpipers, 3 adult Common Gulls, 1 juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, 14 Whimbrel, 500 Black-headed Gulls, 6 Avocets, 5 Redshank, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 16 Shelduck, 1 juvenile Little Ringed Plover, 10 Great Black-backed Gulls, 9 Sandwich Terns, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 1 Greenshank.

 Later inland at Reculver he saw 34 Mallard, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 14 Tufted Ducks, 1 Little Egrets, 5 Greylag Geese, 2 Gadwall and 1 male Marsh Harrier.

July 18th

Matt spent the morning ringing south of the railway where he recorded 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 8 Yellow Wagtails, 12 Whitethroats, 4 Cetti's Warblers, 1 juvenile Nightingale, 1 juvenile Common Redstart, 12 Sedge Warblers, 14 Reed Warblers, 2 Common Tern and 1 Grey Heron. He also saw his first Migrant Hawker of the year.

Matt spent this morning ringing at Reculver where we joined him for a couple of hours. We saw 8 Blackcaps, 4 Chiffchaffs, 1 Treecreeper (162nd)  14 Tufted Duck, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 8 Mallard, 4 Coot, 2 Grey Herons, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Sparrowhawks, 80 Sand Martins, 12 Swifts, 1 Corn Bunting, 1 Little Grebe, 4 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Whitethroats, 1 Grey Wagtail and 2 Pied Wagtails.

July 12th

A walk as far as the Oyster Farm this morning was very quiet. I recorded 2 Blackcaps singing, 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls flying W and 1 Chiffchaff. We also saw quite a few butterflies around the Roman walls including 4 Painted Ladies and 1 Hummingbird Hawk Moth.

This morning Matt walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and counted 4 Yellow Wagtails, 30 Sand Martins, 2 Shelduck with 14 ducklings, 2 returning adult Dunlin, 2 adult Avocets with four young that have moved from Plumpudding, 1 Common Sandpiper, 56 Mediterranean Gulls, 1 Redshank, 1 juvenile Peregrine and 1 Cetti's Warbler.

It was great to get out after nearly five weeks for a half hour walk at Reculver on a bright and breezy morning. I didn't see a great deal, just 7 Swifts flying W, 1 Blackcap, 11 Sand Martins, 4 Linnets, 1 Kestrel, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls and 4 Cormorants.

Matt was also out this morning and walked from Reculver to Plumpudding and back. He saw a good range of species including 1 Blackcap, 1 Kestrel, 2 Tufted Duck, 1 Common Sandpiper, 474  Mediterranean Gulls roosting on the beach, 2 Little Egrets, 170 Sand Martins feeding and moving W, 21 Mallard, 2 Grey Herons, 1 juvenile Wheatear, 2 Stonechats, 1 Common Buzzard, 12 Swifts, 5 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Avocet, 2 Shelduck with 14 young, 5 Redshank, 2 Whimbrel, 5 Curlew, 16 Common Terns, 9 Sandwich Terns, 1 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Bearded Tits, 1 Green Sandpiper and 1 Marsh Harrier. He also saw 1 Hummingbird Hawk Moth and 1 Norfolk Hawker.

July 4th

This morning Matt walked from Reculver to Plumpudding and back. Birds he saw included 1 Blackcap, 1 Kestrel, 60 Sand Martins, 6 Stonechats, 2 Shelduck with 14 young, 1 Swallow, 5 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Avocets with 4 young, 4 Ringed Plovers, 10 Mediterranean Gulls, 140 Black-headed Gulls, 3 Chiffchaffs, 1 Gannet, 2 Common Buzzards, 35 Swifts, 1 Yellow Wagtails, 2 juvenile Bearded Tits and 20 Whitethroats.

Butterflies he also saw were Red Admirals, Small Whites, Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers, Small Coppers, Marbled Whites, Painted Ladies, Large Skippers, Common Blues, Small Skippers, Small Heaths, Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshell and Large White. He also saw 1 Hummingbird Hawk Moth.

July 3rd

Matt walked inland at Reculver and recorded 1 Common Buzzard, 8 Coot, 14 Tufted Duck, 1 female Marsh Harrier, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Kestrel, 1 Grey Heron and 1 Yellow Wagtail.

At Plumpudding lagoon, 2 Avocet chicks had hatched. This is the first time this species has been recorded breeding in the recording area.

Birds he saw included 3 Little Egrets, 1 adult Shelduck with 14 young in Coldharbour, 3 pairs of Tufted Duck, 1 Avocet still at Plumpudding, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 255 Swifts W, 1 Stonechat, 14 Cetti's Warblers, 12 Whitethroats, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 32 Reed Warblers and 26 Sedge Warblers.
