On another sunny morning we had a ringing session on the Marsh south of the railway. Birds we saw whilst we were ringing included 1 Common Buzzard, 19 Fieldfares, 1 Water Rail, 8 Yellowhammers, 1 Curlew, 4 Golden Plovers, 385 Cormorants, 1 Pied Wagtail, 1 Kestrel, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Green Woodpecker, 61 Lapwings, 12 Chaffinches, 18 Blackbirds, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Mallard, 12 Song Thrushes, 6 Redwings, 1 Peregrine, 8 Tree Sparrows and 2 Marsh Harriers.

Birds ringed 19: Goldcrest 1, Chaffinch 1, Linnet 1, Reed Bunting 4, Blue Tit 1, Tree Sparrow 1, Yellowhammer 1, Dunnock 1, Song Thrush 1, Blackbird 7.

November 29th
We spent a sunny morning ringing at Reculver where we saw 2 Common Buzzards, 4 Fieldfares, 3 Redwings, 4 Jays, 8 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Green Woodpecker, 7 Goldcrests, 14 Goldfinches, 2 Lapwings, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Water Rail, 2 Mistle Thrushes, 1 Kestrel, 1 Marsh Harrier and 1 Yellowhammer.

Birds ringed 22: Goldcrest 5, Long-tailed Tit 3, Wren 1, Reed Bunting 2, Robin 2, Chaffinch 1, Song Thrush 2, Blackbird 5, Great Spotted Woodpecker 1.

This morning we controlled an adult Reed Bunting that had originally been ringed at Farlington Marsh, Portsmouth on 13 November 2016. Farlington Marsh is 167 km WSW of Reculver. 

With a  NW breeze blowing Richard Collins had a look at the sea this p.m. There was nothing of great consequence but he did see 6  Red-throated Divers, 2 Gannets, 4 Wigeon and 62 Cormorants.

November 28th
On another damp and overcast morning with a fresh WNW wind blowing we walked from Reculver and along the seawall. Birds we saw included 67 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 71 Cormorants, 1 Kestrel, 3 Redshank, 2 Snow Buntings, 5 Mute Swans, 8 Meadow Pipits, 25 Corn Buntings, 90 House Sparrows, 1 second winter Yellow-legged Gull flying W, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Purple Sandpiper on one of the groynes near the Towers, 1 Siskin W and 9 Great Black-backed Gulls.
Matt was also out this morning and completed the Shuart, Brooksend and Plumpudding circuit. He recorded 6 Goldcrests, 16 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Firecrests, 2 Grey Herons, 1 Common Buzzard, 48 Stock Doves, 4 Jays, 400 Woodpigeons, 2 Kestrels, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 2 Chiffchaffs, 5 Redwings, 1 Raven, 350 Black-headed Gulls, 1 Mistle Thrush, 3 Sparrowhawks, 1 Barn Owl, 3 Teal, 120 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Little Grebe, 19 Mute Swans, 6 Fieldfares, 1 Corn Bunting and 1 Golden Plover.

After heavy overnight rain that lasted until early morning we didn't arrive at Reculver until 0900 and then walked up to the Green Wall with frequent showers still being blown in on a SW breeze. We saw 10 Mute Swans, 17 Goldfinches, 2 Redshank, 1 Rock Pipit, 1 Golden Plover, 2 Snow Buntings, 98 Cormorants flying S, 18 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 15 Carrion Crows, 1 Kestrel and 1 Common Buzzard.

November 26th
It was an unpleasant, overcast morning with a fresh southerly wind blowing as we walked inland from Reculver. We counted 324 Cormorants flying inland to the Stour Valley, 3 Redwings, 18 Linnets, 11 Chaffinches, 18 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Common Buzzard, 3 Teal, 45 Stock Doves, 85 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Curlew, 1 Little Egret and 1 Sparrowhawk.
During Julian Perry's morning run he had 2 Snow Buntings along the sea wall near the Green Wall junction.

It was a very dull morning and ornithologically quiet as we walked from Reculver to the Wantsum outflow. We counted 23 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Kestrel, 405 Cormorants, 1 Stonechat, 8 Redshank, 10 Great Black-backed Gulls, 4 Oystercatchers, 11 Turnstone, 1 Grey Plover, 176 Sanderling feeding in a group on the seaweed by the Wantsum ouflow, 104 Ringed Plovers and 1 Curlew.

On an increasingly overcast morning we walked from Chamber's Wall to the Wantsum outflow and saw 243 Cormorants flying S, 90 Lapwings, 5 Redwings, 12 Blackbirds, 2 Mistle Thrushes, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Fieldfare, 18 Chaffinches, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 64 Corn Bunrings, 1 Green Woodpecker, 3 Stonechats, 6 Coot, 2 Little Egrets, 142 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 32 Turnstone, 2 Redshank, 80 Sanderling, 45 Ringed Plovers, 2 Mallard, 12 Grey Plovers, 4 Dunlin, 2 Oystercatchers, 6 Ringed Plovers and 200 Starlings feeding in the sheep fields.
Marc Heath was out at 0600 and drove to Shuart. On the way he recorded 3 Barn Owls, 1 Little Owl, 2 Woodcocks and 1 Red-legged Partridge. He then returned to Reculver and walked along the seawall to just east of Coldharbour. He counted 1 Golden Plover, 5 Lapwings, 2 Skylarks, 68 Oystercatchers, 210 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 25 Meadow Pipits, 13 Gannets, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Marsh Harrier, 70 Ringed Plovers, 7 Redshank, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, 9 Reed Buntings, 2 Little Egrets, 835 Cormorants, 36 Turnstone, 40 Corn Buntings, 4 Mute Swans, 22 Grey Plovers, 9 Common Scoter, 48 Red-throated Divers flying E, 8 Mallard, 4 Dunlin, 144 Sanderling, 3 Curlew, 1 Merlin, 1 Kestrel, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Shelduck, 5 Wigeon, 1 Snow Bunting landing in the Oyster Farm and 1 Rock Pipit.

This morning Matt walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and back along the Green Wall. Birds he saw included 2 Fieldfares, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 Yellowhammers, 47 Corn Buntings, 8 Redwings,  10 Lapwings, 5 Tree Sparrows, 1 Marsh Harrier, 150 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 6 Gannets, 6 Red-throated Divers, 3 Shelduck, 50 Ringed Plovers, 20 Sanderling, 25 Turnstone, 1 Grey Plover,  73 Oystercatchers, 5 Curlew, 4 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Little Egret, 1 Cetti's Warbler and 11 Coot.
A walk inland at Reculver produced 115 Cormorants flying S, 3 Skylarks, 11 Mute Swans, 2 Stonechats, 3 Teal and 18 Dark-bellied Brent Geese.

We had a brief and wet walk at Reculver this morning but managed to avoid the worst of the rain. All we saw were 194 Cormorants flying S, 1 Pied Wagtail, 67 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Redshank, 1 Stonechat, 1 Kestrel, 6 Robins, 5 Oystercatchers and 1 Common Buzzard.

November 21st
On an overcast morning with a chilly SE breeze blowing we walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and counted 89 Cormorants flying S, 2 Kestrels, 2 Redwing, 13 Fieldfares, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Mistle Thrush, 13 Chaffinches, 11 Coot, 8 Mallard, 29 Skylarks, 66 Corn Buntings, 1 Bearded Tit, 5 Mute Swans, 1 Little Egret, 1 Great Skua flying E, 3 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Stonechats, 2 Common Buzzards and 15 Blackbirds.
Chris Tedder had an hour seawatch at the Towers and then walked up to Coldharbour. Her highlights included 22 Red-throated Divers flying E, 1 Pintail E and 1 Egyptian Goose flying E inland. This is the 16th record of Egyptian Goose at Reculver involving 26 birds.

November 18th
This morning there was a chilly northerly breeze blowing as we walked inland at Reculver and recorded 3 Common Buzzards, 2 Goldcrests, 2 Chiffchaffs, 3 Redwings, 2 Lesser Redpoll, 6 Skylarks, 2 Pied Wagtails, 3 Jays and 1 Marsh Harrier. Richard Collins had a seawatch from Reculver this morning and counted 30 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Red-throated Divers, 7 Gannets, 1 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Common Scoter, 1 Shelduck and 7 Cormorants.

On a calm and quite bright winter's morning we walked inland at Reculver and recorded 2 Pied Wagtails, 4 Chiffchaffs, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Green Sandpiper, 4 Goldfinches, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Little Egrets, 12 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Jays, 2 Goldcrests, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Mallard, 30 Dark-bellied Brent Geese and 50 Carrion Crows.
Marc Heath was out at 0600 at Shuart where he recorded 1 Barn Owl, 2 Little Owls, 1 Red-legged Partridge and 2 Woodcocks and on his drive back to Reculver he had another Barn Owl at Chamber's Wall.
He then walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and back along the railway embankment. Birds he saw included 559 Cormorants, 3 Kingfishers, 24 Redshank, 13 Meadow Pipits, 17 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Rock Pipit, 7 Mute Swans, 36 Reed Buntings, 4 Ringed Plovers, 76 Corn Buntings, 4 Stonechats, 1 Kestrel, 16 Oystercatchers, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Lapwings, 2 Curlew, 2 Snow Buntings, 8 Turnstone, 1 Grey Heron, 4 Shelduck, 23 Mallard, 1 Little Egret, 9 Coot, 10 Skylarks, 1 Bearded Tit, 3 Fieldfares, 1 Little Grebe, 3 Snipe, 1 Yellowhammer, 12 Pied Wagtails and 50 House Sparrows.

It was good to be out again as we walked along the seawall from Reculver. It was overcast with no wind and the tide was just beginning to come in. Birds we saw included 52 Carrion Crows, 120 Cormorants flying S to the Stour Valley, 1 Grey Plover, 58 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Shelduck, 6 Redshank, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Kestrel, 1 Pied Wagtail and 1 male Sparrowhawk.
Marc Heath was at Shuart early this morning and saw 1 Woodcock, 1 Red-legged Partridge and 1 Little Owl. He then moved on to Chamber's Wall where in two hours he recorded 11 Coot, 1 ring-tailed Hen Harrier, 13 Meadow Pipits, 15 Reed Buntings, 1 Water Rail, 2 Common Buzzards, 1 Marsh Harrier, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 10 Corn Buntings, 30 House Sparrows, 17 Oystercatchers, 13 Redshank, 3 Curlew, 12 Ringed Plovers, 19 Turnstone, 43 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Rock Pipit, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Grey Plover, 71 Mallard, 2 Wigeon, 2 Shelduck, 1 Lapwing, 1 Little Egret, 1 Little Grebe and 34 Chaffinches.

With a very fresh NE wind blowing in showers, Matt spent from 0650 to 1450 at the Towers seawatching and was joined by Chris Tedder for most of the time. The majority of the birds he recorded were moving west. He counted 399 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 27 Shelduck, 182 Wigeon, 67 Gannets, 17 Kittiwakes, 42 Teal, 1 Eider, 44 Red-throated Divers, 5 Purple Sandpipers, 1 Kestrel, 8 Red-breasted Mergansers, 380 Cormorants, 76 Common Gulls, 90 Black-headed Gulls, 4 Great White Egrets flying west at 0745, 4 Pintail, 4 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Curlews, 6 Grey Plovers, 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 2 Razorbills, 42 Lapwings, 1 Peregrine, 1 Snipe, 12 Dunlin, 12 Common Scoter, 10 Great Skuas (6 west and 4 east), 2 Yellow-legged Gulls flying E (3rd winter and 2nd winter), 1 Pomarine Skua, 2 Velvet Scoter (196th) and 1 Shag east.
November 14th
Today I received information about a first year female Goldcrest we ringed on Reculver Marshes on 4th November. It was subsequently controlled 9 days later on 13th November at Durlston Country Park, Dorset 238 km WSW.

Matt managed a quick visit to Reculver this morning and recorded 4 Rock Pipits flying W, 1 male Peregrine, 1 Red-throated Diver, 6 Gannets, 5 Dark-bellied Brent Geese and 1 Chiffchaff.
November 11th
During the day Richard Collins saw 10 Gannets feeding off Reculver, Anne found a male Stonechat below the cliffs at Bishopstone and Marc Heath had a Woodcock fly over him at Hillborough as he cycled home from work.

He counted 66 Mute Swans, 30 Gannets offshore, 6 Common Buzzards, 1 Sparrowhawk, 8 Curlew, 2 Grey Partridges, 115 Blackbirds, 20 Redwings, 30 Fieldfares, 60 Skylarks, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Bearded Tit, 3 Siskins W, 72 Long-tailed Tits, 5 Cetti's Warblers, 9 Chiffchaffs, 48 Goldcrests, 1 Firecrest, 1 Yellowhammer and 60+ Corn Buntings.

Derek Smith walked from Chamber's Wall and along the railway embankment to Plumpudding before returning along the seawall. It was relatively quiet but he did manage to see 68 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 female Marsh Harrier, 2 Common Buzzards, 40 Fieldfares, 25 Redwings, 1 Rock Pipit, 14 Long-tailed Tits, 4 Stonechats and 1 Firecrest at Chamber's Wall.

Birds seen included 10 Goldcrests, 2 Firecrests, 2 Fieldfare, 14 Redwing, 75 Lapwings, 1 Heron, 1 Marsh Harrier, 13 Corn Buntings, 6 Golden Plover, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 70 Blackbirds, 5 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Rock Pipits, 4 Siskin, 3 Red-throated Divers, 3 Gannets, 6 Bearded Tits, 4 Stonechats, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Little Egret, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Sparrowhawk and 10 Long-tailed Tits.

November 4th
Whilst I have been incapacitated Matt has been ringing by himself on the Marshes south of the railway and this morning caught a male Pine Bunting (194th) that appears to have a trace of Yellowhammer in it. Primaries 3-5 seem to have pale yellow edges. With dark shaft streaks on the crown it looks like a first year male and so isn't the bird recorded in February 2018. We have a small feather that was dislodged as it flew away on release which we hope to send off for DNA testing, but when is a Pine Bunting not a Pine Bunting?

November 3rd
Derek Smith was out between 0730 and 1230 walking from Shuart, along the embankment to the Green Wall and back via Chamber's Wall and Plumpudding.
