We spent a relatively quiet morning ringing at Shuart and recorded 3 Jays, 12 Blackcaps, 8 Chiffchaffs, 4 Ring-necked Parakeets, 12 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Whitethroat, 6 Goldcrests, 2 Copmmon Buzzards, 12 Skylarks, 1 Grey Wagtail, 4 Song Thrushes, 1 Cetti's Warbler and 1 Mistle Thrush.
Matt then walked round Reculver and counted 11 Chiffchaffs, 4 Sedge Warblers, 2 Jays, 1 Reed Warbler, 70 Meadow Pipits, 22 Pied Wagtails, 3 Rock Pipits, 3 Wheatears, 2 Whinchats, 3 Stonechats, 14 Skylarks, 1 Sparrowhawk and 7 Swallows.
Derek Smith walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and Plumpludding and saw 60 Golden Plovers, 30 Skylarks W, 28 Pied Wagtails W, 4 Grey Wagtails W, 33 Robins, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, 4 Blackcaps and 110 Chiffchaffs.
Marc Heath was also out at Reculver and added 11 Grey Herons, 3 Sparrowhawks, 3 Marsh Harriers, 1 Peregrine, 4 Kestrels, 27 Ringed Plovers, 27 Golden Plovers, 2 Kingfishers, 2 Grey Wagtails, 1 Rock Pipit, 6 Stonechats, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Firecrests and 1 Snow Bunting.

Matt was out early this morning and walked from Reculver to Chamber's Wall and Coldharbour and saw 24 Chiffchaffs, 1 Yellow-browed Warbler, 12 Robins, 2 Sedge Warblers, 10 Stonechats, 1 Little Owl, 2 Kingfishers, 2 Dunlin, 1 Grey Partridge, 7 Redshank, 3 Rock Pipits, 21 Ringed Plovers, 6 Oystercatchers, 40 Reed Buntings, 3 Little Egrets, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Sandwich Terns, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 14 Carrion Crows, 2 Snipe, 3 Goldcrests, 5 Tufted Duck, 6 Long-tailed Tits, 10 Swallows, 2 Whinchats, 30 Meadow Pipits, 2 Tree Sparrows W, 80 Linnets, 1 Kestrel, 1 Teal, 1 Firecrest and 1 Sparrowhawk. On the way home he also had 2 Common Buzzards and 1 Brambling at Shuart.
Derek Smith was out between 0700 and 1100 at Shuart and Chamber's Wall and saw 4 Common Buzzards, 2 Marsh Harriers, 1 Short-eared Owl, 3 Whinchats, 4 Stonechats, 5 Grey Wagtails, 2 Reed Warblers, 3 Sedge Warblers, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 12 Blackcaps, 49 Chiffchaffs and 8 Goldcrests.

September 27th
Derek Smith was out early walking from Shuart to Chamber's Wall. His highlight was an Osprey (175th) flying NE at 0710. Other birds seen included 48 Wigeon E, 38 Golden Plover E, 1 Grey Wagtail W, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Whitethroat, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap, 85 Chiffchaffs and 12 Goldcrests.
We spent the morning ringing inland at Reculver and saw 3 Grey Herons, 1 Yellow-browed Warbler (176th), 3 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Little Egret, 14 Song Thrushes, 3 Kingfishers, 10 Goldcrests, 21 Chiffchaffs, 6 Long-tailed Tits, 22 Skylarks, 2 Water  Rails, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 104 Swallows, 1 Green Sandpiper, 22 Mallard, 2 Teal, 3 Tufted Duck, 2 Common Buzzards, 6 Jays, 2 Reed Warblers, 1 Kestrel, 1 Snipe, 4 Grey Wagtails, 1 Little Owl, 19 Magpies NW, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 61 House Martins.
Later in the morning John Tilbrook found another Yellow-browed Warbler at the caravan bushes and the Snow Bunting 400 metres E of the Towers.

We walked along the seawall from Reculver this morning and recorded 10 Mute Swans, 6 Cormorants, 1 Little Egret, 1 Kestrel, 1 Redshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Kingfisher, 203 Swallows W in one hour, 1 House Martin, 1 Grey Wagtail, 8 Pied Wagtails, 22 Meadow Pipits, 2 Wheatears, 2 Whinchats, 2 Chiffchaff and 92 Linnets.

Matt had a quick walk at Reculver this evening and saw 1 adult Peregrine, 1 Little Owl, 1 Green Woodpecker, 40 Swallows and 3 Stonechats.
Mark Chidwick was also out at Reculver and discovered and photographed our first Snow Bunting of the autumn.

September 23rd
Following yesterday's huge Swallow movement hirundines were moving in large numbers again today with mainly Swallows this morning and House Martins this afternoon.
At the peak of the movement there were 50 Swallows per minute moving W and this afternoon the House Martins were even more impressive with a maximum of 100 per minute passing over. My estimate for the day was at least 30,000 House Martins and 18,000 Swallows.
 Other birds seen at Reculver included 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Sand Martin, 20 Meadow Pipits W, 300 Starlings W, 2 Reed Warblers and 6 Chiffchaffs.

This morning Matt covered the western half of the Marsh and had a good range of species. Jim Bloor birded the Reculver area between 0650 and 0830 and his highlight was a Wryneck perched on the wall of the fort. Other birds he saw included 2 Wheatears, 2 Whinchats, 1 Common Redstart, 1 Stonechat, 2 Reed Warblers, 4 Blackcaps and 5 Chiffchaffs.

Later he walked along the cliffs from Reculver and returned inland. He saw 5 Common Buzzards, 3 Kestrels, 10 Pied Wagtails, 34 Meadow Pipits, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 11 Whinchats, 1 Wheatear, 6 Stonechats, 4 Grey Partridges, 1 Little Owl, 3 Chiffchaffs, 1 Marsh Harrier W, 1 Garden Warbler and 1 Reed Warbler.
After lunch he walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and back along the Green Wall and recorded 2 Kestrels, 3 Chiffchaffs, 4 Yellow Wagtail, 300 Starlings, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Wheatear, 26 Ringed Plovers, 10 Sanderlings, 3 Dunlin, 1 Stonechats, 3 Whitethroats, 14 Golden Plovers, 2 Whinchats, 2 Little Egrets, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Common Redstart and 1 Marsh Harrier.

We spent the morning ringing at Shuart and saw 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Common Buzzards, 2 Kestrels, 48 Lapwings, 12 Red-legged Partridges, 2 Ring-necked Parakeets, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 10 Swallows, 5 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Reed Warblers, 1 Whitethroat, 8 Blackcaps, 2 Willow Warblers and 3 Chiffchaffs.
This afternoon Matt and Anne found another good bird in the shape of  a Red-breasted Flycatcher (172nd) at Reculver caravan bushes. Other birds they saw included 1 Yellow Wagtail, 4 Whinchats, 2 Stonechats, 1 Sedge Warbler, 2 Whitethroats and 2 Chiffchaffs.
Micky Baldock was also out this afternoon and had a juvenile Long-tailed Skua flying along the clifftop towards him and over his head giving good views of its tail projections before flying inland over the houses in Reculver Drive.

On a stunning morning I spent an hour watching from the Towers and saw 13 Cormorants, 2 Grey Herons, 10 Little Egrets, 2 Kestrels, 4 Oystercatchers, 34 Golden Plovers, 3 Turnstone, 1 Redshank, 1 Greenshank, 1 Dunlin, 2 Sandwich Terns, 5 Swallows W, 9 Pied Wagtails, 11 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Grey Wagtail, 34 Meadow Pipits W, 2 Robins, 150 Starlings, 49 Linnets and 2 Goldfinches.
David Barnes was also birding and saw 1 Kestrel, 14 Golden Plovers, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Little Owl, 2 Wheatears, 2 Whinchats, 2 Sedge Warblers and 2 Whitethroats.

Derek Smith was out early at Shuart in the fog with large numbers of warblers moving W in the gloom. He walked to Chamber's Wall and back and counted 2 Common Buzzards, 6 Grey Wagtails, 12 Yellow Wagtails, 85 Meadow Pipits, 35 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Common Redstart, 3 Whinchats, 11 Reed Warblers, 16 Sedge Warblers, 22 Whitethroats, 14 Lesser Whitethroats, 56 Blackcaps, 21 Willow Warblers, 12 Chiffchaffs, and 5 Goldcrests.
Marc Heath was also out early and amongst the birds he saw was 1 Hobby, 1 Whinchat, lots of Blackcaps, 2 Firecrests and 1 Spotted Flycatcher.
This evening Matt walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and counted 20 Golden Plovers, 66 Yellow Wagtails going to roost, 81 Meadow Pipits, 2 Whinchats, 10 Chiffchaffs and 1 Goldcrest.

September 4th
We spent the morning at Reculver where we saw 2 Teal, 2 Shoveler, 1 Mallard, 4 Little Grebes, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrels, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Kingfisher, 4 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Sedge Warbler, 10 Reed Warblers, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Blackcaps, 4 Willow Warblers and 9 Chiffchaffs.
During the afternoon a walk around the Oyster Farm produced 2 Chiffchaffs, 5 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Greenshank, 2 Wheatears, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 350 Starlings, 13 Little Egrets, 4 Reed Warblers, 5 Common Sandpipers, 4 Redshanks, 2 Little Grebes, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Sedge Warbler, 1 Whinchat, 2 Snipe, 1 Pied Flycatcher, 22 Ringed Plovers, 2 Curlew, 3 Kestrels and 1 Garden Warbler.

September 3rd
On what started as a misty morning we ringed at Shuart and saw 1 Grey Heron, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Common Buzzards, 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Kestrels, 18 Lapwings, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Snipe, 1 Turtle Dove, 8 Ring-necked Parakeets, 3 Green Woodpeckers, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 1 Jay, 8 House Martins, 26 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Common Redstart, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 10 Reed Warblers, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 11 Whitethroats, 1 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaffs, 80 Linnets, 1 Yellowhammer and 1 Corn Bunting.
Derek Smith walked from Chamber's Wall to the Wantsum and along the railway embankment and recorded 1 Hobby, 2 Greenshank, 1 Whimbrel, 6 Sandwich Terns, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 9 Sedge Warblers, 13 Reed Warblers, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 8 Whitethoats, 5 Blackcaps, 5 Willow Warblers and 3 Chiffchaff.
This morning |Matt walked around Reculver nad counted 7 Wheatears, 5 Whinchats, 1 Sedge Warbler, 10 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Pied Flycatcher, 1 Whitethroat, 2 Reed Warblers, 1 Kingfisher and 1 Green Woodpeckers.

Cormorants

This afternoon between Chamber's Wall and Coldharbour he saw 2 Chiffchaffs, 30 Swallows, 5 Sand Martins, 2 Little Egrets, 13 Ringed Plovers, 1 Dunlin, 3 Gannets E, 3 Curlews, 1 Sanderling, 300 Starlings, 1 Kingfisher and 1 Willow Warbler.
In addition Vic and Sue Parker found a Pied Flycatcher by the River Wantsum, see below.

September 2nd
This morning Derek Smith walked from Shuart along the railway embankment and back by way of Potten Street. He saw 3 Common Buzzards, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 6 Reed Warblers, 16 Whitethroats, 1 Lesser Whitethroats, 5 Blackcaps, 10 Willow Warblers and 4 Chiffchaffs.
During the day Marc Heath saw a Knot (171st).

September 1st
On a beautiful still and sunny morning we walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and recorded 5 Cormorants, 1 Grey Heron, 4 Oystercatchers, 4 Ringed Plovers, 2 Redshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Curlews, 3 Dunlin, 1 Kingfisher,  12 Swallows, 3 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Pied Wagtail, 1 Sedge Warbler, 3 Reed Warblers, 1 Chiffchaff, 44 Linnets, 9 Reed Buntings and 2 Corn Buntings.
